At Translation Boulevard, we not only provide high-quality translations, but we also help clients navigate the complex requirements of the government agencies that will be processing the translated documents.
One of my clients needed some documents translated from English to Greek. But the Greek Embassy had strict requirements for the translators. To ensure the accuracy of the translated documents, the embassy required the translators to have the following qualifications:
- Certified translators
- Members of the Greek Bar Association
- Or graduates of the Ionian University Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting.
These highly specific requirements raised some challenges for the client, so he reached out to us for help. We successfully helped this client find translators who met the requirements of the Greek Embassy. The client was very grateful for our help, and he left us a glowing Google review.
Despite the challenges of getting documents approved by the Greek Embassy, Translation Boulevard can help. In this post, we will show you how Translation Boulevard’s translation services (based in Washington, DC) can overcome these challenges and provide you with a great service experience.
At Translation Boulevard, we offer Greek translation services and Greek interpretation services. We have qualified English to Greek and Greek to English translators and interpreters who can help with your translation or interpreting needs in the greater Washington D.C. area. We also have Greek translators who can handle other languages beyond English.

Certified Translator – Where You Find Them
When sending a document across national borders, it is important to use a certified translator. Since most institutions in the receiving country may not speak or read the language of your original document, they must rely on qualified translators to do the job.
A certified translator is the best translator to do the job as he or she has been certified by a professional institution or professional association. One of the most highly regarded professional associations is America Translators Association. Sean Song, the founder of Translation Boulevard (that offers Washington DC Translation Services and Washington DC Interpretation Services) is a Chinese translator certified by the American Translators Association (ATA).
But ATA only provides certification tests for 34 language pairs.
- The languages that can be certified for translation from another language into English include: Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian (Wikipedia).
- The languages that can be certified for translation from English into other languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian (Wikipedia).

As you can see, Greek is not one of the languages included in the above list. In other words, the ATA does not have certified translators for English to Greek or Greek to English translation. This does not mean that there are no qualified translators in these language pairs, but it simply means that these qualified translators cannot obtain certification.
The main reason that certain language pairs do not have a certification process with the ATA is because there is lower demand for translation into those languages. If a major language pair (such as English to Chinese or English to Arabic) comes into high demand, the ATA will eventually develop a certification process for that language.

Do Other Organizations Offer Certification in the Greek Language?
The ATA is one of the most prominent organizations that offers certification and provides a list of certified translators in certain language pairs. But the ATA is not the only organization that provides certification. Several state courts also provide a certification process for interpreters in certain language pairs (varying by state). The federal court also provides certification in Spanish due to its high demand.
However, a client searching for Greek translation services in Washington, DC will face a similar dilemma with the state certification as they faced with the ATA. The Maryland Court Interpreters Registry lists only two qualified Greek interpreters in the region. However, they do not have the level of certification required by the Greek embassy. Instead, the court interpreter registry includes two types of interpreters, certified and qualified. If an interpreter did not pass the certification, but they still meet certain standards and are qualified, they will be listed as qualified interpreters even though a certification test exists for that language pair. In addition, if no certification test exists for that language pair, the translator or interpreter will be listed as a qualified interpreter.
Please bear in mind that interpretation and translation are two different skill sets. Many interpreters can interpret well but do not translate well. Likewise, many translators can translate well but not interpret well.

What Other Alternatives Exist?
It is difficult to find certified translators for the Greek language, so the Greek consulate has made provisions for other acceptable translators that are not certified translators. These translators include members of the Greek Bar Association and graduates of the Ionian University Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting. At Translation Boulevard, we have working relationships with translators who are members of the Greek Bar Association and who are also graduates of the Ionian University Department of Foreign Languages. The Foreign Ministry of Affairs of the Greek government also provides a limited list of certified Greek translators.

How Can I Find A Qualified Interpreter?
If you think it is easy to find qualified and trustworthy translators, you are mistaken. It is one thing to find a translator, but it is another thing to make sure that they are trustworthy. Some translators claim they are qualified and can deliver on time, only to ghost you when delivery time comes. This has happened many times to me.
Finding the right translator takes time. It not only takes time to search for the qualified translator but also to vet them. The only way to find out if they are trustworthy is to take time to work with them. This is what we do at a professional translation agency. We are constantly looking for and finding qualified translators in different languages. We then invite them into our network, vet them, and test them. There is a lot of hidden background work that takes place before we ever engage with the client.
Feel free to find your own translators, but it will not be as easy as it seems.
However, if you work with Translation Boulevard, you will be in good hands. We value integrity and trust. We treat our vendors, translators and interpreters well. We pay them well and on time. We also serve our clients with the best customer service.
